The bell requires 8 volt ac., it does not work on DC.

Is the transformer build into the bell structure or a separate piece of kit ?

Transformer is separate. The enclosure is similar to, but not the same as, RS part number 194-7576 to fit a DIN rail like 771-9565. . There are screw holes which would enable the enclosure to be screwed to a wall.

does this need to be plugged into a mains socket?

It’s 12v, so it would be mains in then a 12v transformer to step down the voltage to make it work, if you connect 240v directly to it, you’ll blow it
