First day it feel great
Love that its one solid piece although the vibrations may give my hand an nyquil in the future. But i love the quality and construction of the style. It also is very sharp and i can feel the edge as it can feel my dead skin off ๐. Easy to clean and pretty Heavy though. But im a guy so its not too heavy also have huge meaty hands so its not a problem but i can see how others might find this not their style of knife. But i havent used it yet on anything practical. I recommend it a lot! Super quality to its build. ๐๐ผ

Very nice for the money
I agree with other reviewers who say that this is a nice, solid knife that is slightly under-finished. It has some uncomfortably sharp edges in places where your fingers rest. The cutting edge isn't great, either, but that's to be expected. Overall it's a nice, heavy, durable and straight knife. Very good for the price range. I bought this to test out the shape. I wanted to see if I would like using a Chinese cleaver-style knife before I spent money on a flashy one. I may just stop here. After a little finishing, this thing works like a dream and looks pretty cool, too.

So-So
I didn't expect too much for what I paid. What I received has surprised me. I have a serviceable piece of steel here. It came fairly sharp by my standards but some honing and stropping placed it just shy of razor sharp with little effort. It is quite light and thin which is making it very easy to use. I dice a lot of the time and this type of blade allows me to scoop up large amounts of food and keep on cutting. The fit and finish were lacking a bit. I expected a stamped steel blade with a welded on handle. I got that. I expected rough edges. I got those. I expected an uneven grind and that the blade "sweep" would not be a nice uniform arc. That, too, was received. What I did not expect was to have a relatively large chip/defect in the blade. It is serviceable because it is wide and not deep, otherwise, this would be a return. This was an obvious defect. I possess the skills to fix it and it will be fixed in my profiling the blade further to my needs anyway so it doesn't bother me as much as it might someone expecting to just use this knife with some minor honing. My rating is based on cost/benefit analysis. Unless I find that this blade dulls after every 5 cuts, I can consider this a 4 star purchase with one star deducted for the chip that should not be. I do not believe that many will be able to be that generous if the quality fails in that respect. I spent maybe 25 minutes on this blade and it can shave paper and already weighed almost nothing in my hand compared to some other knives I use. This would be an excellent product to try out and see if you like a chinese chef's knife without breaking the bank. This is about the thickness you need to glide through cuts like all the videos you may have seen. Update 15Jan2016: I took a dremel, file, diamond sharpener, stone and hone to the knife a long time ago now. It's one of the sharper knives in my set, not the sharpest yet but I haven't given it years of care like my sharpest. I still say if you can get a good one up front you won't be disappointed as long as you can sharpen the knife yourself. Otherwise, keep shopping. I might come back in a bit and report on edge retention, I really haven't payed attention to that much and I sharpen my knives a lot as a past time.

Great "Chef Knife" (NOT BONE CLEAVER!!!)
I use this knife for everything I would use my French style Chef's knife for. This Chinese chef knife is a little on the heavy side, but I expected that given the size of the blade. The steel is good quality and takes a hair popping edge (literally) with a quick tune up on a sharpening stone. So far I'm very happy with this purchase, and can't say enough good about it especially given the $12 price tag! Also to note, the solid one-piece steel contruction makes this knife very sanitary when it comes to cleaning. There is nowhere for this knife to harbor bacteria (like some other knives). All in all, great purchase and highly recommended if you're in the market for a Chinese chef knife. (Note I didn't say "cleaver", this is because this knife is not a "bone cleaver", it's meant to be used as a "chef knife" even despite it's somewhat heavy weight. This knife also makes scooping all your chopped up veggies and meat super easy! A nice bonus. If you want to learn more about this style of knife, I highly recommend going to youtube and searching "Martin Yan - how to use kitchen knife" there is an excellent 5 part video series where he explains all the various uses of this type of knife, also search "Martin yan's chinese knife" This video offers some other inventive ways to employ this knife. Once you see these videos, this will be the only style knife you ever want to use!

My favorite aspect of it is the nicely curved blade
I got this Cleaver to replace another Chinese cleaver I had that was carbon steel. It had a really flat blade that being a western person was awkward for me to use. The Winco 401 is definitely worth what I paid for it. I am a chef I use it at work. My favorite aspect of it is the nicely curved blade. It is the best knife ever for mincing herbs, and it is also great for tasks where you want to move something you just cut on the big blade. The blade is to me too thick for cutting vegetables nicely, some like red peppers its fine but carrots will break instead of cut, and tomatoes and onions it doesnt do well with either. I use it to do alot with however, as a cheap abuse knife and it is perfect for that. I cut boxes, hammer stuff with it, etc. I reprofiled the edge much steeper and sharpened it on a 6k stone. It will shave readily. I keep this thing nearby all day, and a regular chef knife to do the few tasks its not good at. For what I paid, the amount of use I have gotten and continue to get, and overall value I give the Winco KC-401 5 stars. It is a great product for a great value...

Worth every penny.
Absolutely wonderful knife. Heavy, comfortable, and strong. The metal handle can get slippery, but will no doubt last as long as the blade. I am not a pro chef, but I love this in my kitchen. My only regret was not buying one sooner.

Incredible value
This knife is absolutely amazing for the price! The blade is sharp right out of the box, and it cuts through meat and vegetables effortlessly. It feels solid and well-balanced in the hand, with a comfortable grip.

Sharp and well made..but
Sharp and well made, it is a low-end clever. The metal handle will last forever, but it is not as comfortable to hold as a wooden handle. It is also a bit on the heavy order for a vegetable chopper. It is sturdy enough to chop through chicken or duck bones in one motion. It would be perfect if it were somewhat smaller maybe 6-1/2" X 3" and a bit thinner. However, for the price it is the best value one will find in the USA, particularly compared to the clevers available retail at similar prices.

Whoa! Big, shiny and beautiful!
I actually purchased this brute to cut giant blocks of melt and pour soap. My 7 inch cleaver was unable to handle the job, and this was described as "hefty" That's an understatement as this thing looks like Paul Bunyan's axe in my tiny hands. I feel invincible. This is sharp, and takes all of the work out of chopping. I can now cut huge quantities of soap in no time at all, and without the sore hands I got having to push so hard to get through it. The one piece is great, no rivets, no chance of falling apart mid slice. I'm excited to see my hubby try it out in the kitchen (after a thorough cleaning in the dishwasher) as he loves his Asian cuisine. Time will tell how sharp it stays between both jobs, but for the price I have no qualms in giving it some love when it needs it. Great tool for the job at hand, great price, and great quality makes this cleaver a clear win!

Been the only knife I've used all year
After moving into a new place, and leaving my prior knife collection behind, I looked into alternatives and found a great video praising this style of knife. Since using this, it has been the only knife I've ever used - despite since ordering and having a knife set since. This one just does everything, and is so convienent for so many everyday use cases. The only thing that would be nice is some serations on the sides to prevent things like potatoes to sticking to the knife. It's also sharp, so do adjust your cleaning habits accordingly.
