She has read it cover to cover several times. Dory is the baby of the family with a HUGE imagination. She has a fairy god-father named Mr. Nuggy and an imaginary friend named Mary who often leads her astray (like taking off her shoes and losing them at school). Dory must fight the bad witch named Mrs. Gobble Gracker. My favorite part is when Dory and Mr. Nuggy attempt to make a poison soup to deal with Mrs. Gobble Gracker (See pic below). (It actually backfires and she loves it.) The illustrations are like a child's pencil drawing and add to the charm, as though Dory drew them to tell her story. Many drawings make this a quick and easy read. My daughter has read great excerpts aloud and even I found them hysterically funny. Review: Fun, engaging book!) - My granddaughter loves this book!

This is an excellent book. It's clever and funny and speaks to the deep parts of young children who can feel ignored or unwanted in a big person's world. I read it to my four- and eight-year olds, themselves younger siblings, and it was a magical experience for all of us. My eight year old could easily read this on his own, and I'm sure he will, but he enjoys being read to as well. The illustrations are charming, and add to the story in an engaging and organic way. It was also well-written--not preachy or heavy-handed in "teaching lessons," and not dull and predictable. Reading it out loud was a pleasure, because the language never felt stilted, nor did it talk down to its readers, and that is a hard balance to find in early chapter books. I was thoroughly charmed by this book and look forward to more from Ms Hanlon.

Cute looking book
I bought this as a Christmas gift for my 5 year old niece. A book? Yeah, I'm that kind of aunt. To be fair she looked (somewhat) excited when opening her present and saw PJs and this book. She turned to her mother and said she couldn't wait to read it with her. So bonus points with my sister for presenting (<---did you see what I did there) an opportunity for some mother/daughter bonding! I can't speak to the story itself as I was strictly motivated in purchasing this book because of price and the cuteness factor of the little girl on the cover. Freckles and a bit of crazy hair what's not to like!

This Book Was So Funny!
(This review was written by a child.) I read Dory Fantasmagory and it is very funny. Dory is very imaginative and her brother and sister get very annoyed with her. She has a lot of imaginary friends (but some aren't exactly friends!). My favorite part of Dory Fantasmagory is after Dory's brother and sister tell her about Mrs. Gobble Gracker (who they made up, but they didn't tell Dory that). They made up Mrs. Gobble Gracker so Dory would stop acting so babyish. But that didn't work at all! For example, she asks a bunch of silly questions like: Is she a vegetarian? Does she vote? Does she like ice cream? Does she like anything? Does she wear a long black cape? Does she have a cell phone? DOES SHE EAT RUBBER CHICKENS? The rubber chickens question was my favorite. It's so funny! I think you'll really like Dory Fantasmagory. I've read it so many times, some of the pages ripped!

DORY FANS!
WE LOVE DORY! When we discovered Dory, it had us in stitches. We read a lot of books, and we like a lot of books. But this book was special. We read this book over and over again. We got the audiobook, and they have listened to it over and over again. I decided to buy the book since we had originally borrowed it from the library. It's the first longer book that got my daughter interested in reading. Dory is so imaginative and the story is just so wacky and cute and silly and it's fantasmagory. I'm not sure why it hasn't won any awards yet. We LOVED the sequel too, and I cannot wait for the 3rd installment. Thank you Abby Hanlon for writing such a wonderful story that captivates my children's imagination.

How does this book only have one review?
Maybe because it's American - well, be the first to jump on this trend. This series was my daughter's best book discovery in the last couple of years. I order the first two books in bulk and they are my go-to birthday present for all of her classmates' birthdays (she just turned 7). They're funny, quirky, unpredictable and did I mention funny? There are lots of pictures for beginning readers (kind of Tom Gates-ish) but they're also a great family read-aloud (the 11 year old gets mad if we read when she's not there). This is also the rare series where each book gets progressively better/more funny.

Grandios
Absolute Kaufempfehlung!
