Are they good sized?** A: Nancy, I've got a gas grill that measures 20x36 and I purchased 2 bag of this lava rock, 14lbs., and it gave me a uniform 4 inch layer of rock across my grate. The rocks are between 2 to 3.5 inches in size and range in color between a rust red to a dark grey. They were exactly what I needed to provide an excellent grilling flavor after they were seasoned from a few grilling episodes. I would not hesitate to buy them again. **Q: Can these rocks be safely used in an indoor vented gas fireplace?** A: yes **Q: Can you use lava rock as a filler on the sides of a gas vented fireplace, where I will also be placing some ceramic pine cones?** A: I don't see why you can't use lava rock as a filler on your gas vented fireplace. The lava rock is used in our outdoor Propane Fire pit. It is durable. The Lava rocks have withstood rain snow fire(in the fire pit) and still look and work great. The only thing I would suggest is take them outside and hose them off first and let dry, they are dusty straight from the package. I put them in my gas grill and kept adding more as they disipated. I have went through quite a few pounds now that I have found a little place locally to buy them cheaper. My husband wanted something more realistic and so we bought these. They are perfect and are much nicer than the glass. We wanted to have the look of "plenty" of rock so we purchased 2 and are very happy with the outcome. These are not small rocks, they are larger like you'd expect to see in a large fire pit.I also want to add that the price on these rocks are excellent. Very reasonable, we shopped around online as well as in the stores and theses are by far the best value for the money. It came with two large iron plates shaped like rows of charcoal briquettes, one plate on each side of the grill. They rusted thru, but while I could find the parts listed online, they were no longer available. The rest of the grill worked just fine, so I was looking for a way to save it. Bought a Universal Lava Rock Grate & this bag of lava rocks. Couldn't find any info online to tell me how much lava rock to order. This 7# bag was enough to cover a 11 1/2 " X 23" grate completely, with a few tiny pieces left over. I discovered you can't just dump the bag in, but rather place the large pieces on the areas of the grate with large space between the bars, & then place the smaller pieces in between. There was quite a pile of lava dust left afterwards, about 3 cups worth.
