Microsoft MAIN-35956 Sculpt Ergonomic Mouse (L6V-00001), Black

This mouse is extremely comfortable and feels great even after using it for long periods of time. The shape fits my hand well, the controls are easy to use, and overall it feels like a solid, well-designed mouse. My only real complaint is the wireless dongle, which feels a bit flimsy and not as durable as the rest of the product. I’m a little more careful with it because of that. Aside from the dongle, though, I’ve been very happy with the mouse and would definitely give it five stars.

I've been using this mouse for about 3 years now. It is an awesome mouse. Very comfortable and ergonomic. Battery life lasts a long time. I've replaced the AA batteries maybe 5 times in 3 years. Tracking works well/smoothely, as expected. Some things I've noticed that are worth being aware of (these don't bother me much, but I imagine they could matter to some folks): * The glossy black surface will tend to collect grease from your fingers over time. It's very noticeable against the shiny black and is kind of nasty. Luckily, it also cleans off very easily (I tend to use an alcohol or clorox wipe). * The black skids on the bottom glide smoothly on the surface of my desk, but they also leave behind black residue on the desk surface over time. My desk's surface is plastic fake wood so I just wipe it off with a wipe every once in a while (takes some scrubbing). If you have a real wood desk, you may want to use a track pad instead. * The connectivity of the dongle can be bad if there is a lot of metal near the receiver. For example, I used to have a metal padlock on the k-slot right next to the USB port where the receiver dongle was plugged in, and that seemed to mess with the connection a lot. On the other hand, plugging this into the back of my monitor seems to work just fine. * On macOS the windows and back buttons do not work. They work find on Windows and Linux.

Useful device for my hand

I love this mouse, I was looking for something that would be better for my wrist, wich was starting to bother me at work. I work in a digitization unit at a university library, I spend ALL day clicking, doing lots of editing. I also didn't want a ball track one, I needed something I could get used to quickly and use with precision. I got them to buy me one of these at work, after having it for a couple weeks, my wrist felt so much better, I made them get them for all the workstations in the area (6 more). My student employees really like them too, one says I have "ruined" her for any other mouse. We all got used to the slight change in angle quickly and were able to do precision work with them. They are a little bigger/heavier than a lot of mice, but it fit well for me and several students, I have fairly small hands, there was a variety of sizes with the students. I've since bought one for my parents and they both like it, and my dad has very large hands that are now tending to shake. I think the slightly bigger and a little heavier mouse makes it easier for him to work with. I've used this for over a year, all day 5 days a week. The other workstations get quite a bit of use also. We haven't had any problems with any of them. The batteries on mine last about 5 months, the other ones last even longer. They have been knocked on the floor various times and have survived. My tower is on the floor and pushed to the back/side of a large desk and I haven't had any issues with it not being able to connect. Haven't had any interference from wifi or something else, I'm at a university and there are various other signals for things all around.

Coming from a Microsoft Natural 6000 ergonomic mouse this is one step forward and one step back. First the step forward: Gone are the weird rubbery bits of material that would yellow and disintegrate over time and in their place simple black soft-touch and glossy plastic, which looks and feels much better (even if the glossy part is a smudge magnet). The Sculpt mouse is about a half inch shorter overall than the 6000, but looks even shorter because it is much rounder, with the front sloping sharply toward the table compared to a much higher front of the 6000. This does make the Sculpt slightly more comfortable than the 6000 because you hand tends to envelop it better. Now the step back: Because it's smaller than the 6000, large-handed folk might find it less comfortable. My hands are about 7" to 7.5" and I notice far less of my palm in contact with the mouse than on the 6000. Not sure if that's good or bad yet. But wait... there's more! Whoever designed this mouse must have very long thumbs. The "back" button is too far forward (as other reviews have noted). Yes, you can slide your hand further forward over the mouse, which is actually comfortable because of the more rounded shape compared to the 6000, but then the scroll wheel is too far back. So I have to move my hand position for either the scroll wheel or the back button, which is not ideal (the Sculpt's back button feels like it in about the same position as the 6000's forward button, relatively speaking). One more potential downside -- it looks and feels like the angle of the mouse has decreased slightly from the 6000. Only by a few degrees, but still worth noting. Other than that... it's a mouse, and far more comfortable than horizonal mice. Same dpi as the 6000, same button pressure and scroll wheel feel. The position of the back button lost it a star. I'm also noticing it is slightly more jaggy than the 6000 -- small movements do not seem to register as well as with the 6000, which is odd since they probably both use the same laser. Time will tell if my hand adjusts to the slightly smaller, rounder shape. If Microsoft made is slightly larger or fixed the back button position, boosted the dpi slightly to 1200 and made it bluetooth, I'd give it six stars (seriously, why are they so few decent bluetooth mice? The compact Sculpt mouse is BT, so why not this one?!) Update: After using this for a few hours I'm coming to the conclusion that the back button might be a major problem for me. Not only do I have to reposition my hand to use it, but because it's flush I have to use quite a lot of pressure to click it, tensing my whole hand. This is the opposite of how an ergonomic mouse should be and totally different to the effortless back button on the 6000. Whoever designed this should be forced to make a million clicks on it.

I have carpal tunnel issues in both wrists, but it's worse in my right since I'm right-handed. A while ago a friend who had RSI issues recommended this mouse to me and it's been all I use ever since! I have one at work for my work desktop and one at home for my personal laptop. It makes a world of difference! I started a new job a few months ago and had to wait two or three days for a new mouse to arrive (since my workplace technically owns the mouse they buy me). In just those two or three days my carpal tunnel was much worse and I was having a lot more tingling and pain. As soon as my mouse arrived, it got much better. I have much fewer problems with my carpal tunnel overall using this mouse vs a standard one. The same mouse I had at my previous workplace had been going strong for the 3 years I had it. And that was even after many times I accidentally swiped it off my desk and it clattered to the floor. It's still there for someone else to use. I like the feel of the material of the mouse. The only downside, in my opinion, is the "back" button on the left side of the mouse where the thumb goes. I'm sure it may be useful to some people, but I wish I could simply disable it so I don't actually hit "back" when on a webpage. I've gotten used to it and don't do that very often anymore, though I used to do it all the time when I first got the mouse and was getting used to it. Again, just wish I could disable it and not think about it all. But if that's the only drawback, it's still worth it for this mouse because of everything else.

So, so. It's a mouse. It points and clicks. It is manufactured well enough. But its special features, and why I bought it, area all a letdown. If you are buying this to protect against carpal tunnel or other overuse syndromes of the wrist, it might work because the high profile of the device keeps your wrist cocked up into a preferable position. Aside from that claim, I see nothing much ergonomic or compelling about this product. I bought it because the mouse I was using fell apart. I selected this product mainly because the Amazon listing said the item is 5.1 inches long. This mouse is for my desktop, and I prefer a larger or longer mouse. Five inches plus was the length of my all time favorite mouse, the MS Wireless Intellimouse Explorer 2.0 (model 1007). This mouse, the L6V-00001 is only 3.8 inches long, shorter than most others I have, on par with many portable mice meant for travel and mobile use. This product does what it a mouse is meant to do - point and click - but it is not particularly comfortable for me, in fact the opposite. Thoughts: A decade ago, mice manufacturers came up with a general design, typified by the Intellimouse, that was meant to be ergonomic. Now, a generation on, new company designers are second guessing their forebears and reinventing what might be ergonomic. The Intellimouse is no longer made, but it sells on the aftermarket for $200-250. The demand is there, supply is short, and you might think that the geniuses at MS would get a clue. The L6V-00001 is to ergonomics what "new math" of the 1970's was to education (destroying competency in the STEM subjects). Of course, other people with other hands might experience this mouse in a more favorable way. Amazon descriptions. Some products distinguish size of the gizmo itself versus the size of the package. Some listings mention only one, but make it clear if the size refers to the box or the item inside. This mouse was listed with "Item dimensions" 5.1 inches. That usually seems to refer to the actual widget, but in this case, it is the box. If you are looking for a long mouse, this is one is very short. In my hands it is quite uncomfortable and creates a mismatch between position of my fingertips and where the buttons are. My hands are just average size for a man, but I could see this mouse useful for smaller hands, women and children more aligned. If the Amazon folks are listening, it would be nice to have product versus box dimensions clearly discriminated. Scroll wheel. Somewhere in a review I read "smooth scrolling" for this product. Scrolling as judged from motion of the cursor on the screen is indeed smooth. But the scroll wheel is a click-stop type, not a smooth moving type. The clicks on this wheel are firmer and louder than most mice I have used. So, for someone like myself who prefers a true smooth scrolling wheel without friction, this product is way too far to the other side. Buttons. Next to the thumb is a Windows button and a back button. The Windows button takes you to the start menu on a Windows machine. That might be useful for some people, but for me it is irrelevant. I never use the navigation buttons on a mouse, so the back button means nothing for me, and as a plus, it is tucked out of the way so it is not going to get pressed accidentally. However, if the back button is a feature you use or depend on, being "out of the way" makes it a nuisance to get to, another ergonomic failure. For me, the short length and the click-friction style of scroll wheel make this an unusable product for every day activities. I did not return it because I can always use a spare mouse or a portable one. Pros: It functions like a mouse should. Cursor movement is smooth. It does work on a variety of surfaces quite nicely. The product description says it will not track on glass or mirror, so do not expect that it will, but it did for me. It comes with 2 AA batteries already loaded. Cons: Short length. Noisy stiff scroll wheel. Other reviews lament the long length of the receiver. Since I use this on a desktop, that is irrelevant to me, but for portable use, the receiver does indeed stick out longer than those of other devices or from other mice makers. With the back cover off, there is no obvious set of screws to disassemble the device and get to its insides so it can be cleaned. Older MS mice were all easy to disassemble, clean out fuzz and cat hair that were clogging the wheel or shading the detector, and then get back to business, but the newer devices make this hard. I guess they just want you to buy a new one after a year. This review gets three stars. The mouse does what a mouse is supposed to do. "Ergonomics" is questionable. Other downsides are more about personal preferences rather than fatal flaws of design and manufacturing. This might work for you, or maybe not. If you are looking, read the user reviews and go by them more than the product description.

This mouse really deserves five stars, but I am struggling with giving it that rating. This mouse is super comfortable, with the vertical orientation leaving your hand in a natural position as you use it. I've never had wrist or hand problems, but still I notice the positive difference in fatigue when I use this mouse. The mouse is very accurate, and the large glide surface makes it feel like it's floating across the desk. The buttons give great tactile feedback, and the wheel scrolls easily with the steps easy to stop on and easy to scroll from. This could be the most perfect mouse I've ever used, and is such a pleasure to use I bought one for home, too. So why the five-star struggle? This mouse is tall. Very tall compared to the mice I've used over the past 30 years. So tall, in fact, that occasionally (at least it's no longer frequently like when I first received it) when I reach for the mouse, I knock it off my desk. After so many years computing, and reaching for the mouse becoming a mindless activity, I'm so used to a mouse being a certain height, I simply don't reach high enough. So, the side of my hand bangs into the mouse, sending it flying (since the non-friction surface works so well). More often than not when this happens, the bottom cover pops off and the batteries come out. Of course, they never fall next to the mouse - no, I'm crawling on my hands and knees looking under chairs and desks. When I do this at the office it's a minor annoyance, since I have carpeted floors there. At home I have hardwood, and the mouse takes a beating when it falls. So much so that the wheel no longer works. I'm going to have to replace it, but this mouse is so great that I'm going to buy another one. But if I break it again, I may need to look elsewhere, just for my wallet's sake.

Solid, but expensive

Esse é o melhor mouse que já tive. Uma pena que parece ter saído de linha pq nem a Microsoft tem. Mas, felizmente, esse vendedor tem, e por um preço caro mas bem menor que outros raros vendedores, o que fez a minha alegria. Veio super rápido ... agradeço e recomendo!!!

This is actually the third time I bought this mouse. I hope Microsoft still makes it. I had a hard time searching for this kind of mouse. Fits perfectly in your palm and has smooth transitions. It is a heavy mouse, though, but that's what makes it sturdy. The last one I used it for a good 5 years before it broke. Happy with this buy.

Beats using a traditional mouse, and perfect for my palm size. The transmitter is larger than the keyboard's and would prefer using a single transmitter for both. Not too much of info available online about this, but yet to install the Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard center.
