Six years and five albums after their debut, Van Halen had become one of the biggest bands in world around the release of 1984 , which includes a number of the band s most legendary songs such as the #1 hit, "Jump," "Panama," and "Hot For Teacher." Mastering engineer Chris Bellman, who remastered the original albums at Bernie Grundman Mastering Studios, was enlisted for this new version. In order to produce the original sound the band intended, Bellman cut straight from the quarter-inch tapes for CD; for 180-gram vinyl; and for the digital versions. Review: Great product! Hot for Teacher and Panama sound very crisp and I couldn't be happier with it. If you're on the fence just do it. Not sure how many Millennials or Gen-X would toe the line, but you won't be sorry.

Van Halen's classic, not full of "Jump"s.
Van Halen's classic album, filled up with plenty of risky and innovative guitar riffs (signed of course by, what else?, guitar virtuoso and experimental Eddie Van Halen) which defined the essence of hard rock sound during the 80's. The subtle blend between hard rock and keyboards worked really well, just for this record and its era, keeping in mind the New Wave movement invaded almost everything then. Much more of it would become tedious... Excellent vocals, amazing guitar riffs and a few hooking songs made this one of the decade's music exponent, still good enough to enjoy almost after thirty years. However, not all of the songs are as catchy as Jump or Panama, so listener may not expect much more beyond that, but not a bad album anyway with more than a half of good songs. Some drum sounds on a couple cuts eventually reminds Bonzo's on Led Zeppelin IV. A must in any 80's collection.

The last from the original line up
Before Eddie and Alex decided to kick David Lee Roth out of the band they released 1984. And all was well with the world. This album produced a number of classic moments for the 'big 80's': - great and fun videos, along with top charting songs. - Eddie on keyboards enhancing his already awesome rhythm lines on the incredible 'Jump'. - 'Panama' - a tour de force of guitar and Roth vocal silliness that pushed it right over the top and into maximum MTV rotation. No one could touch this band in 1984 and this album still stands up. That is if you like shredding guitar, screaming vocals, and hit singles. Then Eddie and Alex supposedly grew tired of Roth and his goofy actions and kicked him out of the band and went with Sammy Hagar, who did a credible job for a number of years until Eddie and Alex kicked him out of the band. If you want to know what all the fuss was about in the early to mid-80's then pick this cd up. Then pick up the earlier releases - most notably VH 1 and VH 2. Then move on the Hagar material. It's not bad - just not as good as 1984 or anything that came before it.

The last great VH album?
As everyone knows, their great frontman left after this amidst much recrimination and blaming-each-other on the parts of EVH and Roth. It`s pretty scary that it all happened 23 years ago (I missed it being too traumatising back then, due to my age)...but if only Eddie wasn`t in and out of rehab in 2007 and they could just get along I`d still love to see the classic VH line-up live, and even better, record some new stuff. I still think 6 amazing albums is a pretty decent output, and can`t think of many other bands who`ve managed that. 1984 isn`t my favourite, but it`s still a stunning, 5-star effort. The band weren`t all that happy with Eddie starting to throw a few keyboard numbers in and I think I agree with them, but "Jump" and "I`ll Wait" are great songs, just not the hard rock we`d learned to adore from the previous albums. "Jump" has one of Eddie`s greatest guitar solos on for sure. It`s not really that song though that makes the album so special. There a three or four others that are a sign of a band at it`s absolute peak. Firstly, "Panama", classic Roth, with the sort of tongue-in-cheek sleaze that VH never showcased again with Sammy Hagar. Classic Eddie too, he just blows me away every song. Alex and Mike are great as ever too. "Hot For Teacher" is wonderful too, funny and loud and a real party song! "Top Jimmy", "Drop Dead Legs" and "Girl Gone Bad" would be career-best songs by any other rock `n` roll band. My favourite song though is one of the less heralded VH tracks and the album closer, "House of Pain". It`s almost as though Eddie had distilled all his anger with Roth`s antics and released it in the form of this huge, monster of an attacking solo. It was one of the earliest written VH songs that missed the cut on all their other albums but Alex insisted it was on this time and thank God. If I could play the solo I would die a satisfied man...it`s amazing and I`m always stunned by it...I know guitar playing isn`t all about speed, and that`s why I love EVH because the feel is incredible too and it`s perfect. So, buy it. And revel in the greatest four-piece rock band there ever was (and who knows...perhaps they will be again one day)!

Excellent album : 1984 (Remastered), Van Halen.
