Is the black band actually a tough resistance?

That depends on the level of fitness of an individual. If one is already doing weight training or specifically pumping weights and weight machines in the gym or or their own, this may not be strong enough for that type of person but usable to get the results one needs re sculpting and toning. For those who take cardio, strength, conditioning, zumba, yoga, pilates or other a few times a week may find that there is sufficient resistance in these bands. It is thick and well made. Whatever band is used, how you use it is what counts, the quality of the movement and effort in the various movements while keeping body in proper balance and alignment.

Do you know what the spring constant of this is?

The band expands twice its length, but it depends if you are deconditioned or fairly fit. The Seniors in my class use the medium yellow. The red is heavy, which is used by those who are not deconditioned. The black is extra heavy that is used by someone who has been consistently participating in Tabata, strength or other cardio/strength classes (2 or 3 times a week.

I teach Water Fitness bootcamp, currently using fabric bands - looking for longer term resistance bands in the chlorinated pool. Will these work ?

Yes.... They will work but they will wear out faster because of the chlorine. Good luck and have fun!
