What is the maximum movement in the bolt ? - How far can it extend below the gate ?

There can as large or small amount of travel as us needed ( within reason) dependent upon where you site the first of the two smaller guides. The rear part of the latch is really just to park the bolt out the way. I actually used these horizontally on large ill fitting pump station doors to help pull them together to stop them rattling.

What is diameter of bar or what size hole do I need to drill in ground

The hole you need is 15mm diameter. The bolt comes with a ground plate so you can see the size of the hole you need. We didn’t need to use the ground plate as we already had a hole but our previous bolt had become rickety. We are very pleased with the new one.

Excellent quart!

Yes, it's a gate bolt; but it is really good quality and amazingly cheap. I bought it to hold back a large (6-foot+) wide gate and it does just the job that I need it to.
