I needed a strong magnet for my Kokoist gel nail polish and I read somewhere to try a U-shaped magnet. Wow, this is perfect! I removed the base, painted a nail, and slowly slid my finger under the magnet and it magnetized the particles perfectly! It was the least amount of work required to magnetize the particles. Perfect for DIY nails.

If you're part of the growing community of folks of using these magnets to create a "velvet effect" when using magnetic nail polish, here's the review you're looking for! Using a much more powerful magnet like this, instead of the standard little weak "stick" magnets that sometimes come with the bottle, is an 100% certified GAME CHANGER. What's important is that you place your finger inside the U of the magnet while the polish is still WET (do it immediately after application). Then watch the instant magic as it pulls all of the magnetic particles into a STUNNING and LONG LASTING velvet effect! No more holding the stick on the sides and top, back and forth a bunch of times! For good measure, I rest my finger in there for about a minute, so that it can start to dry and really seal everything in. I saw on the nail polish groups that people use it with the U shape facing up, but I assume that the effect would also work if you placed your finger in it with the U shape facing down. However, it may be harder to control bumping your nails on the sides and top that way (can't see your fingertip as well). Be very careful with the flat "plate" looking magnet that apparently is there to protect the main magnet. You need to remove it before you use the magnet for your nails; I wouldn't try to pull it straight off. I recommend trying to slide it off to one side instead, and work it off carefully from there. Once you go to put the protective plate back on, do NOT hold it in your hand and let the magnet connect back to it "freely"; it's super powerful and you could get a bad pinch. If I recall correctly, the instructions in the package say that you should place it on a flat surface, and then carefully bring the U shaped part down towards it on top, making sure that your fingers are not in the way. If you didn't perfectly center the main magnet on the way down, just shimmy the plate it until it's in the correct spot. Happy painting!! My still photos do not come even CLOSE to capturing how strong the velvet effect is...I can only post one video with my review. You've simply got to see how great the effect for yourself!

This is a great size and quality for magnetic nail polish manicures. Beginner friendly. Highly recommend.

This is a review for the 15 lb u-shaped magnet. I bought this to help me achieve the velvet look with my magnetic polishes. I use air dry polishes only. This magnet worked great but it was a tight squeeze for my thumb. I saw best results with the fingers that were not squished (pinky, ring, and middle fingers). I would recommend this for people who have a hard time achieving the velvet look with regular magentic wands/nail tools. The magent also works if you rest your finger on top of it while painting your nail. All the photos are from me placing my finger in the gap and painting my nail with my finger tip in the gap. I held it there to dry for 20 seconds. Please note: For the blue polish in the photos I used the u-shaped magnet for my ring finger & pointer finger and a standard nail magent tool for my pinky and middle finger. I used the u-shaped magent with my finger placed in it for all of the gold colored nail photos. A warning: this magnet is more powerful than the wand magnets that usually come with magnetic polishes which means any metal nail tools or nail magnets will be attracted it. I woud be sure to check your tools for attraction to this magnet and keep them at a foot or further away from the magnet to avoid crushed fingers or worse, a ruined manicure 😭

I love this magnet. I love magnets in general, and this one doesn’t disappoint. It’s super strong, so watch your fingies when you’re taking the protective metal plate off. It’s like a magnetic crocodile, it’ll snap those babies right off and you’ll be like Captain Hook, but with fingers, not your whole hand. It also works for cat eye nail polish if you have little fingers or are super skilled.

! DIE REALISTISCHE HALTEKRAFT BETRÄGT CA 1KG, ANSTATT DER VERSPROCHENEN 10KG ! Ich bin weit mehr als nur enttäuscht von diesem "Ding"! Insgesamt 9 Tage nach der Bestellung kam dem Magnet endlich an. Nach dem auspacken fielen mir als erstes etliche kleine Krater auf, die vorher durch die Verpackungsrückseite versteckt waren. Also die typischen, bei schlechtem Gussmaterial auftretenden kleinen Löcher. Diese waren zum Teil immerhin so tief, dass der rote Lack diese nicht aufgefüllt hat. In andere ging der Lack gar nicht erst herein. Außerdem fielen mir auch noch einige weitere unschöne Stellen auf. Naja ok, soweit noch alles im grünen bis gelben Bereich dachte ich... Aber jetzt kommts: Bei näherer Betrachtung des "U" von der Seite, bemerkte ich erst, dass hier ein recht tiefer Krater -äußerst ungekonnt- halbwegs weggeschliffen wurde, wodurch der Magnet an dieser Seite sehr stark angeschrägt wurde! (Siehe Bild.) Dadurch ist er für die Experimente aus dem Buch "Magnetic Current", für die er eigentlich gedacht war, von vorne herein vollkommen unbrauchbar. Zunächst überlegte ich noch, ob ich ihn vielleicht anderweitig irgendwie gebrauchen könnte. Bis ich dann die angebliche Haltekraft von 10kg überprüft habe: Selbst unter allerbesten Bedingungen, also 100%ig gerade halten, 100%ig gerade und saubere Kontaktstellen und bloß keine schnellen oder seitlichen Bewegungen machen, mit etlichen Materialien aus unserem Metallschrott-Container getestet, war es nicht möglich mehr als 4,5kg für einen ganz kurzen Moment wenige Millimeter anzuheben. An einem normalen Stahl-Doppel-T-Träger in unserer Werkstatt angebracht, betrug die maximale Haltekraft etwa 2,5 bis 3kg. Sofern man nicht daran gewackelt hat und alles ganz exakt gerade hing! Von meinem nur 1,8kg schweren Luftgewehr konnte man, durch die Rundung bedingt, mit ach und Krach den Lauf vorne etwas anheben. Weiter hinten war gar nichts mit anheben. Wirklich halten, also so das man an dem aufgehängten Gegenstand auch mal ein klein wenig wackeln kann ohne das er sofort wieder abfällt, kann der Magnet ungefähr 1kg. (Sofern er das angehängte Material "mag" und die Kontaktfläche 100% gerade ist.) Zu weiteren Tests war mir schlichtweg die Lust vergangen. Ich war einfach nur noch Stinksauer. Also mein Fazit: Ich hätte am liebsten einen Minus-Stern vergeben, dass geht aber leider nicht. 18 Tage warten um dann ein ähnliches Unding geschickt zu bekommen werde ich sicher auch nicht. Ich möchte einfach mein Geld zurück haben.
