This is a fine tool - Vermont Woodworker
This is a good tool for the money. Attention everyone all good woodworking steel (chisels, pull knives, etc.) uusally come unsharpened to various degrees. This arrived beveled and coated with a think coat of good paint. It took five mintes sitting down on the porch with a file I use for hatchets and axes to hone the edge and start using. Please be aware this is very hard steel and can be difficult to sharpen and will chip and even break if mishandled. This is intentional since the hardness ensures a long wearing edge. All who order something like this need to learn sharpening! It is an essential skill and an important one. Enjoy!

Will not make you Paul Bunyan
Listen to the reviews. This works great but expect to sand/grind the paint off the edge. It is there to keep it from being dangous and am guessing to keep it rust proof till sold. I read the reviews and expected this thick paint. IT IS NOT READY OUT OF THE PACKAGE. It will be dull. Expect that. I sanded and filed the edge off and this works great. It is not magic, it is still work. If you buy a rake or shovel you still have to put forth the effort. Doesn't mean the rake or shovel are bad. There is a small learning curve of about 10 or so min if you haven't used a draw knife like me. I am still getting better at it. Don't be fooled at how simple and easy You Tube makes this look, even sharp it is a bit of elbow grease, think of it as a good work out. Have fun shaving

Works as intended (in spite of paint)
Yes, when you get it you may be puzzled by the fact it's not at all sharp and covered in paint. Turns out, the paint is a good way to protect the edge during shipping. By the 3rd or second draw across a piece of wood the edge will be out and the tool will start to cut in as it is designed to do. Seems to hold the edge rather well so far, but I may come back to this review after the first time I sharpen it to possibly alter this. To be quite honest, it's a low budget tool for a once off or twice off job, if you are looking for an everyday tool there's likely a ton of better ones out there.

Comfortable
Great tool! Pulled out of the box, attached the handles to the blade and was ready to go. Blade is painted over with black paint. I thought about taking it off with a grinder. But found that after about 5 or so minutes, the paint started chipping away and the blade was working much better. Size is good for smaller logs. I would go for a 10" blade for bigger projects. Over all, easy to use tool. Comfortable in the hands. Sharp under the paint. Seams like a durable blade!

Sharp, Comfortable, and Built to Last
Iโve been really impressed with the Carmyra 8" Straight Draw Knife. Right out of the box, it feels solid and well-built, with a good weight that gives you control without feeling bulky. The blade came sharp and held its edge nicely even after extended use on hardwood. What I like most is how comfortable the handles areโthey give you a secure grip and make long carving sessions a lot easier on your hands. Whether youโre debarking logs, shaping wood, or doing finer shaving work, this tool performs consistently and smoothly. Itโs a great option for both beginners and experienced woodworkers. For the price, the quality is hard to beat. Definitely a reliable addition to any woodworking toolkit.

Soft steel
I was expecting it to be dull and cheaply made and it is. But what I wasn't expecting is for the edge to be so thick that I'd want to hit it with a mill file. I also wasnt expecting the edge to be soft enough that a file would cut it. So the steel is pretty soft and I don't expect any edge that is put on this to last very long. Time will tell...

If you know what you're doing...
This is a cheap, sturdy, ready to use drawknife. The black coating is just protection. I used it for debarking logs on some outdoor craft work and this thing just kicked butt. Ate it all. There are complaints about the coating of the blade being a hindrance to immediate use. The coating on the tool skims right off after some use and reveals a sharp blade ready to go to work without ANY sharpening. Use it and the black coating on the cutting edge wears off very quickly. SAVE THE ORANGE BLADE COVER. The other complaint is that it "skips" on uneven surfaces or doesn't seem to want to take a shaving. Put the handles on right and keep the bevel UP and you won't be jerking around like a ding-a-ling. I say all this having NEVER used a drawknife in my life and only seen it used on video. If you can't figure it out, that's a YOU problem. In terms of quality, it is what it is. Cheap and durable. If you're looking for craftsmanship-of-the-Amish type precision or making royal heirlooms this isn't your tool. If you want to debark logs in the forest to make a hammock tripods and a chair, this has you covered and then some.

Comes with an angle where the blade should be, but no edge.
If you can create an sharp edge or get someone else to do it, this tool is very nice to use.
