Taking some cues from Epson and White, he encourages his clients to write letters to their addictions. This is something that he finds interesting as it shows the depth of the addiction, how willing the person is to change, and it begins to get the client to think about change. He also encourages clients to attend AA/NA (or another appropriate 12-step meeting) before they use their drug of choice. What could be considered "controversial" is that Diamond tackles mental health issues along with addiction issues. It is a paradigm to solve the addiction first and then mental health issues. This approach seems to work for him and would be considered consistent with a Family Therapy approach.
