#1 New York Times bestselling series The first book in the #1 New York Times bestselling series that inspired the hit ABC Family TV show Pretty Little Liars. In ultra-trendy Rosewood, Pennsylvania, four beautiful girls are hiding very ugly secrets. High school juniors Spencer, Hanna, Aria, and Emily have grown apart since their best friend Alison DiLaurentis went missing three years ago. But now someone is sending them anonymous notes, threatening to reveal their darkest secrets. There’s only one person who knows that much about them, but Ali’s gone . . . isn’t she? Full of unexpected twists and shocking revelations, this is the first book in New York Times bestselling author Sara Shepard’s compelling Pretty Little Liars series. Review: Delightful Guilty Pleasure - Yes I gave Pretty Little Liars 5 stars. No, this novel is not in the same category as Shakespeare, but for what it is, it's great. I wanted to read the series after seeing ABC Family's Pretty Little Liars. The TV show does differ from the books. SPOILER ALERT! The premise: At the end of seventh grade, a clique of 5 girls was ruled by one of the girls, Allison. Allison is the classic "mean girl." The girls all had a secret referred to only as "the Jenna thing" which bonds them and keeps them close. Allison then disappears and the rest of the girls fall out of touch. It's now the beginning of junior year for them and they all start receiving mysterious texts from "A." The problem-A knows everything about them including secrets they don't want others to know. So, who is A? The characters: Aria-Having returned from being out of the country for 2 years, she meets the man of her dreams at a local bar. Only problem-he turns out to be her English teacher. Spencer-The typical over-achiever, Spencer is out to be the best-and to move out from underneath her perfect sister's shadow. One Emily-A competitive swimmer struggling to meet her parent's high expectations, Emily starts to become confused about what she wants including if that means she wants a boyfriend or girlfriend. Hanna-When Allison was here, Hanna was the "fat friend." Now, she's turned into Rosewood's "It" girl. Of course, she has her share of problems-a dad who she doesn't talk to anymore, a boyfriend who won't sleep with her, etc. Comparison to the TV show-I personally, even though I'm 30, think Pretty Little Liars is a great show. Very guilty pleasure! Well, I think the first novel was actually better than the TV show. Review: A Great First Start - It’s been three years since the night Alison went missing leaving Aria, Spencer, Emily and Hannah on their own. Alison was the glue that held them together and without her the girls drifted apart moving off on their own paths. Each girl has spent the last three years changing while Aria really had the chance to find herself in Finland, and Hannah lost all the weight to be the hottest girl in school. While Emily has worked hard at swimming and is already being watched by scouts and Spencer is focused on academics being better than her older sister. Alison was known for knowing a lot more than most about the girls and when start showing up only things that Alison knew the girls start to question what happened to her. Someone knows more about their lives and is threating to reveal all their secrets. The girls are wondering if Alison has returned after all this time gone. The case has long been cold but a new lead may just change everything. We have four points of view a little insight from each girl who happens to each being dealing with her own share of problems. I didn’t have a favorite girl who I was able to connect with like I did on the show but that could be because it’s only been a week in the book. I’ve been on the fence since I watched the first season of the TV show on ABC family. I recently got into a little chat about who could possibly be A on the TV show and decided to give it a shot. First off the girls don’t look like they do on the show and it kind of irked me a bit. It was interesting to see how it played out in the book and I honestly think it works better. I like that we get to see an insight into each of the girls lives and found it interesting that while it’s different from the show some things still are the same. Pretty little Liars is a YA mystery that mixes a coming of age story entwined with romance and tragedy. The author had done a great job of weaving a captivating story. I’m curious to see how the series plays out and I very well may read the rest of the books they are quick and fast paced reads.

If you liked the Pilot Tv Show, You will like this
Being a fan of the television series Pretty Little Liars on ABC Family, I was very interested in reading this series. How would the books differ from the television show? What characters were from the book and which ones were added only for the show. I loved Pretty Little Liars! This book was well written and the characters are amazing. They are all so different and they compliment each other well. I went back and forth with my rating from 5 hearts to 4 hearts, than ultimately rated as 5 hearts. I ad to base this rating on the book and writing itself. The reason for this was because I had already watched the television series and live it more than the book. I'm sure if I had read the book first, I would give it higher praise. There is plenty of humor, mystery and tantalizing situations throughout the book. Girls gossip and the gossip in scandalous! This book basically covers the fist episode in the television series. I plan on continuing to see if there is anything different in the books than there is in the show. I gave this ♥♥♥♥♥ out of ♥♥♥♥♥ on Goodreads

Hallowed High School Halls
As I wandered through the hallowed high school halls, with a target on my back, being judged and ignored in equal parts, feeling like a space alien with three heads, my shoes squeaking on the hard linoleum, scared that I would be stuffed in a locker before third period and left for three more, I tried to picture a happier place and time, possibly being stuffed in a wooden coffin and buried six feet under, or chained to a basement wall by my ankles. No, high school wasn't that bad, but it could have been. Hormones raging like a banshee, peer pressure intercepting you from four directions, and the haves conducting their own form of discipline on the have nots certainly makes for a warped alternate universe, one that I am glad I can safely put in my rearview mirror. If not for high school, though, and the teasing by the jocks and trying my best to blend into the wallpaper, or the painted lockers, I wouldn't be the person I am today. But for Spencer, Aria, Emily, and Hanna, they are just getting started, and I can't really say I'm envious. Even if I could go back and supposedly be one of the cool kids, I'd say not just no, but hell no. And then I'd proceed to punch the genie in the mouth and kick him in the balls. Despite the classification for PRETTY LITTLE LIARS, this novel felt more romance than mystery/thriller with all the teenage hormones bubbling to the top of the surface. Romance might not truly fit either because I never realized how much teenage girls thought about sex. I mean, I'm a guy, so we think about sex every 37 seconds. But gals think about it nearly as often as we do, probably about every 77 seconds. They're just better about hiding it. If you like a little Prada or Gucci or Coach, because you live near Saks Fifth Avenue, then this novel is definitely for you. As you pull on your Abercrombie skinny jeans and Von Dutch t-shirt, paint your lips with Chanel lip gloss, drop your Treo in your cherry-monogrammed coin purse, slide on your Miu Miu heels, stuff a Marlboro between your lips, and climb behind the wheel of your BMW, rumbling across the cobblestone streets of Rosewood on the way to your second student council meeting, the first major meeting since you lost the presidential race and ended up as vice-president, you can listen to this breezy read blaring through your bass speakers. I could NOT put this down
The first time I'd heard of the Pretty Little Liars, I was watching a YouTube video; a makeup tutorial (no laughing please). And the girl in the video said before she started the tutorial she was "so excited she just got the 4th book of the Pretty Little Liars" for her Kindle. And the stated how good the books were. Now this wasn't coming for a little teenie bopper, this is from a makeup artist adult. So of course being a book nerd I had to look it up. I'm so glad I did. First thing caught my eye was the rating and then a I read the description. I was so excited to get this book and read it, it was something so new from what I normaly read. I ate this book up in 2 sittings. It's a classic who-did-it type of story that keeps you turning page after page until you get to the end just to find you, you still don't know who killed Ali or is Ali really dead. I had to tell everyone about this book and how good it was, the next night, I bought the 2nd book. I've now started 4th book in the series, I've bought Season one of the TV show and my husband and myself are hooked. We can't wait until Season 2 is available to buy, and I'll be getting the next book, and the next book, and the next. This writer is really good, don't think this is just some cheesy gossipy girl highschool drama teen book. Oh no! This is excellent for anyone looking for a page turning mystery that keeps you hooked. I'm eager to try the Lying Game by this same author and am hoping for the same kind of power this series has over me.

Addicting!
I was extremely surprised to find how much I enjoyed this book. I thought it would be about whiny, spoiled teenagers suffering through high school drama, but I was definitely wrong. Sure, it is about spoiled teenagers in high school, but the story was strangely addicting! The girls are crazy! I cannot believe some of the things they did at such a young age. The story is pretty much centered around the secrets these girls have from before their friend, Alison, vanished in 7th grade. For 7th graders, they have a lot more secrets than I have ever had. It was interesting to see that those secrets still control their lives three years later. I loved how each chapter was in either Spencer's, Aria's, Hanna's or Emily's point of view. Spencer and Aria were by far my favorite characters. I found their lives more interesting and exciting than Hanna's or Emily's. I did not really like Hanna at times, and Emily was just forgettable to me. Even now, it was hard to remember her name. The creepy messages that the girls receive from a person known only as 'A' reminded of the show Gossip Girl. Every time I read one of them, I could not help imagining them being said in the same voice as Gossip Girl. Overall, Pretty Little Liars was fast-paced. It was extremely hard to put it down (I was only reading five chapters a day for the Read Along), and when I did put it down, I was thinking about it for the rest of the day. I wanted to know what happens next, and if I was not reading it as part of a Read Along, I would have finished it in a day. I would recommed this book to mature teenagers and up since there are many mature themes in this book such as drugs, alcohol, student-teacher affair, shoplifting, eating disorders, etc. In my opinion, it is more of a guilty-pleasure type of book, but I sure did enjoy it! I am definitely looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

Why Did I Never Read This Earlier?
When I go on the search for a new book to read, I will probably read a small excerpt from quite a few before one feels right. That is how my experience has been with this particular series since the books started being released. It has never felt like the right time to begin it...until now, that is. After watching a recent interview of one of the girls who stars in the show, I finally decided to begin the first book. And I am glad that it was finally time to read it. First of all let me just say that this book pleasantly surprised me. Sometimes in a young adult book there can be an almost degrading juvenile nature to the story. It is almost like when an adult dumbs down a conversation when speaking to a small child. The sentences are oversimplified and it feels like the author doesn't respect the reader's intelligence enough to complicate things a bit. However, in this book, it had that high school feel without making it too simple. I greatly appreciate that. Now for the characters... I must say that my favorite one right now is A. While he or she is the main antagonist throughout the series, in this book I kind of felt like the girls deserved what taunting they did get. They were terrible in junior high and did some things for which they should definitely be remorseful. But I get that sometimes this taunting will go too far, and in a way it already has, and while I don't really condone that, A is still kind of an awesome character. I mean, I like the main girls, but A just has that aura of mystery I absolutely love. I am definitely going to be reading the rest of the series. I just have to know what other secrets and enemies lie in these girls pasts. And I'm kind of curious to see what else A has in store.

Updated Book
I'm giving it 5 stars because its PLL but i have now found out that books 1-4 have been updated and "modernized". I personally was looking for some 2006 nostalgia and am not overly pleased with this change. Examples of things that tipped me off to it not being set in 2006: 1. Hanna and Mona discussing tiktok vs. Snapchat 2. Emily having a picture of Lili Reinhart in her locker (from tvs Riverdale which started in 2017, so she would have been a literal child in 2006) I have been told to only get the books with pictures of dolls on it now. 5 stars still but heads up about the cover pictures.
