Review: Great Emergency Knife - I purchased this after seeing my nephew with a Tac-Force knife, and realizing how handy it would be to have one of these emergency first-response knives in case of an accident or my daughter locking herself in the car. I think originally this knife was over $30, and the desertcart price was $26, and the day I purchased this there was a lightning deal on a Gerber Bear-Grylls tool, but it turned out that it wasn't the Ultimate Survival Knife (which is what I had hoped to get.) I had this on my wish list prior to that, and the only thing I didn't like about this compared to the others was this didn't have the emergency whistle, lanyard, sheath with built-in sharpening stone, or fire starter like the Ultimate Survival Knife...and it didn't have spring-assisted open like the Tac-Forces. However; I popped over to my wish list, and saw that the price had gone down to around $13, so I immediately ordered this with the Pocket-Pal sharpener, and my total was still just over $20...so I added a couple humidifier packs for my humidor (fulfilled by desertcart for free shipping,) and just waited for the arrival.) When I got the knife I was more than pleased. The construction and quality of the blade and sharpness were beyond my expectations. I immediately banged the glass breaker into my solid-wood coffee table my wife received as a gift from her grandmother, and there was no give anywhere on the knife. There's a little allen or hex-wrench twist on the side to adjust tension on the blade to make it easier or harder to flip open, but it arrived at just the perfect tension for me (too hard for my 4-year-old daughter to flip open but easy enough for me to snap open with one thumb.) This knife is a work of art, and I'm sure it will be handy in any emergency situation and good for self-defense in case of a home invasion. Also, in retrospect, I'm glad that its not a spring-assist open; that's just one more thing that WILL eventually break, making the knife defective and (at least to me,) annoying. I am completely happy with this purchase, and considering the quality of the knife, AMAZED at the low price. I mean really; a Smith & Wesson knife for right around $13...lol, where else but desertcart? Thanks again, desertcart. One more thing, Indiana just signed an agreement to be the 4th state to start charging taxes on desertcart purchases beginning in 2014. My brother is more than livid about the whole issue, and I'm not pleased about it myself, but if you continue to offer such great deals compared to local store shopping, I'll be more than happy to pay taxes on purchases through your website; it will still be an amazing deal compared to walking into the local Walmart to purchase the same things for $20-$30 more.
Review: Excellent knife; much cheaper than similar alternatives - I'm a law enforcement officer, and I was looking for a new knife. I'm also a father of two, so the diaper budget gets priority over the knife budget! I uploaded a picture (with the ruler) if you are curious about the overall size. It's about 8" open, 4.5" closed. I purchased this knife after shopping at various sporting goods/police supply stores and Wal-Mart for a decent knife. Many of the knives in Wal-Mart were between $15 and $45, and some of the knives in the other stores approached or exceed $200 for the brand-names. This knife feels sturdy and a bit heavy, which, in my opinion, is a plus. I believe that you will be able to keep a firm grip on this knife with wet or sweaty hands. All four of my fingers just fit within the curves of the handle when the knife is open. The black-colored portion of the handle is knurled, which should also help you maintain a secure grip. The belt/pocket clip holds on well without feeling too tight. When the knife is open, the blade does not "wobble." Aside from an excellent price, I chose this knife because it includes three extra features: a partially serrated edge, a glass breaker (a small steel point on the handle), and a seat belt cutter. The second two features could be life savers. The heft will help if you do have to break auto glass, which is can be difficult to break without the right tool. Thanks to the disc on the spine of the knife, this knife can be opened with one hand if you take your time. It is not spring assisted, but you couldn't expect this feature for under $20. Actually, I didn't think about it until the knife was in my hand--the disc is a great feature. You could easily open the knife by pinching the blade with your opposite hand with or without this disc; however, the disc allows you to easily work the knife with wet/cold/slightly numb fingers or gloves. I noticed that the knife is assembled with star-drive screws instead of rivets. Time will tell if these screws will work loose. The knife is manufactured in China by a company called Taylor brands. The S&W name appears on the knife and on the box but nowhere on the instructions/warranty info. I don't see any specific "stainless steel" markings on the knife or in the instructions, which recommend occasional lubrication to prevent rust. Overall, the knife appears to be built well. Considering the extra features and the price, I would recommend.
