Also, the lid is in contact with the cooler air of the surrounding room, some of the steam will condense on the plastic. The condensation will drip back into the main water supply. Therefore, water that has contacted the plastic lid will be present in the water delivered to your cup, whether it splashes on it in liquid form or not. There are kettles available on Amazon that claim to have no plastic inside whatsoever.
