Copleston, an Oxford Jesuit and specialist in the history of philosophy, first created his history as an introduction for Catholic ecclesiastical seminaries. However, since its first publication (the last volume appearing in the mid-1970s) the series has become the classic account for all philosophy scholars and students. The 11-volume series gives an accessible account of each philosopher's work, but also explains their relationship to the work of other philosophers. Review: Arrived in good condition. - I received this 11 volume paperback set of Copleston, A history of Philosophy. The set was well packed and it arrived on time and in good condition. I have only just started reading them, starting with volume 2 on medieval philosophy, but I am sure I will enjoy reading all of them. Review: A classic. Best history of philosephy to my opinion - Read some of the volumes in digital form. Such a wonderful and expert presentation of philosephy, so that I want to own a set of the hardcopy.

Great resource
I acquired Frederick Copleston's "A History of Philosophy" more than 40 years ago when I was a graduate student in philosophy at Johns Hopkins. (My, how times have changed. The individual volumes have a prices on the cover of anywhere from 95ยข to $1.25.) I have used this multivolume history frequently ever since. Whether I have wanted to find information on some aspect or other of the thought of a particular philosopher or when I have wanted to get an overview of a particular period in the history of philosophy, I have turned to Copleston. There is no philosopher of any consequence or any aspect of that philosopher's thought that is too minor to not at least receive a mention by Copleston. His knowledge of the history of philosophy is encyclopedic. While I also highly recommend using primary-source material to gain a fuller knowledge of the thought of any philosopher, Copleston is a great starting point if one wants an initial overview before plunging into a philosopher's works in more depth. Of all the histories of philosophy available, this is certainly one of the best and the most complete.

Don't Buy (Unless you read Greek, Latin and other languages)
These volumes use Greek and Latin like there is no tomorrow. Untranslated. Unless you speak those languages, this purchase will be a waste of money.

Nice๐
The books are in good condition. I'm slightly miffed about the quality of the paper because I genuinely was expecting top quality paper for such costly books. But this is good too I suppose. These are a must-buy. ๐

Before Copleston - After Copleston (See photos below)
Clear, authoritative, detailed and not tedious, Copleston's monumental work is the sine qua non (He sometimes gives Latin side-notes) for anyone seriously interested in Philosophical thinking. As a reference, for a quick glance, or in an in depth exposition, he is superior and accessible.
