Great Book but I suggest the Digital version...
For anyone interested in illustration and its historical context this is a fabulous book, with one caveat. I bought the paperback version and wish now that I'd bought the "E textbook" version instead. The book is about 80% text and 20% illustrations and consequently the actual illustrations are often quite small. I'm assuming that on the computer screen one could easily zoom in and get a good look at this fascinating collection of art. In printed paper format all one can do is get out the magnifying glass.

Excellent, well researched
This book, in my opinion is the first of it's kind. Excellent, well researched.

As an Illustrator I found Meggs A History of Graphic Design a more informative read.
Mentions Mark English once - no visual. No mention of Gary Kelly . . . two chapters on medical illustration??? A lot of focus on women illustrators.

CONDITION REVIEW
Trust the other reviews for content. This is only for condition. The copy that I received was battered and dirty. Corners and pages bent. Cover dirty and shabby. A real let down. I will probably return this copy and order a replacement as I think this will be a treasured book and educational tool.

Emphasis on the written history rather than illustrations
So far haven't found that many books on illustration. Took the plunge with _History of Illustration_ after finding a used copy. I'm having to look at many highly detailed images through a magnifying glass - what were the authors thinking? Took a star off for this reason. This text-heavy volume is best suited for an art historian rather than an illustrator. Regret investing in the paperback version instead of an e-book.
