I wish this story was in the movie too. *This may contains spoilers*
I enjoyed this book from the moment I started reading it. It was good and interesting to read it from Akari's perspective, although the whole book is about both the characters. You find out what kind of person Akari is from the start and how she grows into a mature woman and why she turned away when the trains passed at the ending of the film, etc. It was interesting to read her thoughts of things, like falling in love, starting and changing schools, etc. This book was not perfect though, Takaki's story was very depressing and kind of boring through some of it but it gave him closure at the end and why he smiled the way he did at the final scene of the movie. The book also explained why they stopped writing to each other. My favorite part of the book was reading the two letters that we never got to read in the movie. The one that got lost in the wind and the one that Akari kept in his possessions. It was such a joy and relief to find out what those letters said because it felt like Akari and Takaki always had a connection, it was just time and distance that grew them apart. I'm not saying this book had a happy story though, it's a sad story too. It would have been great if some of this story was in the film as I felt the movie was too short. Five centimeters per second reminded me of when I once fell in love and reminded me what that can be like. If you like the film then you have to read this book too or at least find out any confusion you felt in the movie.
