Review: One of the greatest live albums in rock, with guest appearance by John Lennon - You don't see this album listed in any of those lists of best live rock albums, but it certainly should be near the top of any such list. A magnificent record of the great Elton John in performance in both London and New York in 1974. Playing tracks from most of his albums up to and including Goodbye Yellow Brick Road it is easy to see why he was, and still is, a superstar. This is mid-seventies stadium rock at its absolute best. powerful, energised and emotional by turns. Great songs, great singing and a magnificent band. Disc one is highlights from the Royal Festival Hall concert in London, while disc two is from Madison Square Garden in New York. This New York concert is very special, of course, because it includes a guest appearance by John Lennon, where he and Elton perform three songs together. I don't think rock music actually gets any better than this. Review: Elton (old songs) Live, Nothing Better Than That - Elton live with his best early songs much better than album cuts.

Uneven but still compelling
This is compelling because of the inclusion of John Lennon singing two duets with Elton, neither of which were included on the original vinyl album. It's a shame, though, that the producers chose to eliminate John speaking at the beginning of the track, "We'd like to sing an old song from an old estranged fiancee of mine called Paul. This is one I never sang and we just about know it." Then EJ's band launches into the 1963 Beatles classic, "I Saw her Standing There." The highlight of this collection is the hauntingly lovely early EJ ballad, "Skyline Pidgeon." This is one of Elton's most under-rated songs in his entire catalogue and he rarely has performed this live. Unfortunately, the sad fact is that Elton's live performances from the 70's concentrated on flamboyance and not the music. Unlike other performers like Paul McCartney, Elton does not replicate the recorded versions of his songs on stage. Some people prefer this, others yearn to him sing "Daniel" as closely as possible as the standard recorded version from 1972. This live album shows his vocal limitations and also the fact he doesn't replicate the studio versions of his songs. This is an uneven double album, but essential for understanding the pop phenomenon of Elton John in the mid-70's.

A huge improvement over the original release
The LP that I still have was released in 1976 and did not do Elton justice. Just a few songs from two different venues. It definitely lacked a sense of continuity. I knew they just put it together so that he could fulfill contractual obligations but it could have been so much better. This 2 CD set is simply amazing and such a joy to listen to and it rectifies the deficiencies in the original release. This is Elton live and at his peak. It does not get any better.

My Favorite
Loved Elton and Bernie's music since the 70's. Personally I prefer his first 15-20 years over his last 20-25 of music. And enjoy listening to a few of his live recordings more; they are sooo dynamic. 'Here & There' (1976) is likely his best, but also like '11-17-70' (1971); in addition to studio albums like Tumbleweed Connection (1970), Empty Sky (1969), Friends (1971), Caribou (1974) and others. Fast or slow it's on 'Here & There'.....whether its Skyline Pigeon or Love Song....or Grey Seal or The Bitch is Back. If you're over 30 to 40, this will probably be the quintessential Elton album (ops, sorry...CD). And if you're younger, you'll hear (not the very beginning but) probably the largest and longest major force in pop music.
