EnvironMolds LayTex Liquid Latex Mold Making Rubber, 32-oz. - Quality, Flexible, Detailed Reproductions for Plaster and Concrete

Worked beautifully and I’m super pleased with it because I honestly didn’t have high expectations. I paint antique pieces to look like skulls/monsters and sell them. The cost was getting too high so I decided to try making my own molds of the originals so that I can reproduce these antique pieces and have multiples to work with. This particular piece measures about 6-7” high and 5” across with a depth of about 4”. I applied 21 coats (the jar says 12-15 I believe but I wanted it to be thick to hold the plaster without any worries). It turned out amazing! I didn’t trim my nails down completely so when removing the latex from the original I made some nail imprints (which isn’t a huge deal because plaster sands easily so I can removed them from the castings without much effort.) but next time I plan on being extra careful. So far I’ve knocked out about 15 (or two 25lb bags of plaster) on this ONE latex mold I made. It easily has another 15-20 castings left if not more so the latex is durable in that sense. I’ll definitely be buying this brand again for future latex mold makings. I have about 1/3 of this size jar left after the 21 coats I did.

Below is my initial review of the product and here is my updated version: It takes patience and getting used to but ultimately, it's great stuff. a fan speeds drying time and sometimes it will never get not tacky. Just plan on getting a mold in a few days, not instantly. I used this product to make a mold of a head planter. It was not a success. I spent hours upon hours on the layers, carefully following the directions and when I had what seemed like a sturdy mold, I removed it. I filled it 4 different times trying to get a decent finished product, each time making what I thought were sensible improvements that might make it work, about $30 in cement and plaster in the garbage. Even with 15 layers of rubber, powder, gauze, reinforcement, etc., it bulged and collapsed no matter what I did. Now, I have still given the product 3 stars because I know it could work, it would just take to much work to work for my project.

I've tried a lot of liquid latex rubber and I would rank this as probably my third favorite. It did okay, the only thing I found was it wasn't as pliable when de-molding plaster items. But it's fairly good and I would use it again especially over any you can get at Michael's or Hobby Lobby. I haven't found those to be very useful at all, even with the reduced price after using a coupon. I was told though by a fellow mold maker that often those products are old so you have to be careful buying them anyway.

So, while I didn't use the product in a standard fashion, it still served it's purpose very well. I needed it for use on an upholstery foam prop, and I wanted to give it reptilian skin. Definitely not the most conventional use, but it worked wonders. Godzilla looks like Godzilla and the latex is durable, so I'm happy. The latex goes on nicely, and doesn't have the most intense odor. Wear gloves and provide yourself with adequate ventilation, and you'll be fine. Each coat took about 3 hours to dry/cure, while using a fan on low. The hair dryer works too, and speeds the process along a little, but I'd rather let it sit for a while. It seems to get firmer with time. It will be tacky at first. Treat it with talcum powder.

I've tried all the major brands over the years and EnvironMolds is the "winner". It's the thickest of them all and doesn't run on vertical surfaces. Also the quickest curing. Other brands I've had to wait an additional week after I finished the mold because it was still too soft and wouldn't snap back to its original shape. This is the only brand that I'll ever buy now.

This is the stuff. Don't waste your time with the cheaper Latex products - they are mostly water by content. You wouldn't know up front as they don't list % of latex content. This product is what you need if you are in need of durable latex coating/substrate/etc. I have used this for mask-making and as a reinforcement for vintage car mats. Does what is needed in either case. See pics.

No odor, durable but takes a lot of coats, so it takes a lot of time. Overall good product for the price. Better for smaller projects, easy to use again just takes a while given how many coats you have to do and letting it dry in between each.
