What black magic makes this work without wiring or battery replacing?

When you press the button it makes a click, and that kinetic energy is harvested and used to send a signal to our receiver. So by clicking the switch, you are powering it.

The website mentions a "dimming functionality" built in this product. How does dimming work if there are only buttons?

Dimming functionality is achieved by holding down a button until the desired brightness.

What is the suggested solution for the fact that these seem to mount shallower (recessed) than standard faceplates?

Our faceplates match industry standards and should match your other switches. You can order our product and make sure that it matches you the other switches in the house, and if it does not then you can request a return for a full refund within 30 days.

I am looking to experiment with trying to connect this to zha via a cc2531 usb zigbee stick. how to i put the switch in pairing mode?

I am not familiar with usb zigbee stick. Think it only works with hue. To pair is to just click up and down.
