its plastic with a chrome finish, but it is very sturdy.  And the suction cup is incredibly strong.  I put it on my glass shower door (without twisting the lever that is supposed to activate the suction) and i could barely pull it back off the glass.  After twisting the lever, it doesn't move AT ALL.  Very surprised.  Also was surprised by the fact that I got two.  I was expecting only one.
