Solid Sequel to Battle for the Cowl with Batman Taking on Black Mask

*by C***E on Reviewed in the United States on February 18, 2017*

Life After Death is the second Batman arc following the great Long Shadows wherein Dick Grayson takes up the cowl after Bruce Wayne's death. Life After Death is a direct sequel to Battle for the Cowl, which introduced a new Black Mask who quickly outmaneuvered Two Face and Penguin in a fight to control Gotham's underworld. This story sees Dick and Damien racing against time to take down the new Black Mask before Gotham is consumed in chaos. With the National Guard sending in troops to topple Gotham's underworld, the clock is ticking. The only real downside to the story, in my opinion, is how fast the tables seem to have turned against Black Mask. For being such a strategic genius in Battle for the Cowl, the crime lord starts this arc backed into a corner and pretty much stays that way for the whole story. The return of classic villains like Reaper and Doctor Death are fun additions and you definitely get the feeling that the new pretender is being driven insane by the mantle of Black Mask, but it is a big about face from being so in control of the situation a short time ago.

    Batman: Life After Death (hardcover)

*by X***S on Reviewed in the United States on June 22, 2011*

I must say I'm disappointed with this one.The book was published as a mystery tale with "and you won't believe who Black Mas is". The problem is... the identity of the new Black Mask was revealed in another previous book (Batman: Arkham Reborn, if I'm not wrong). So, no real big mystery, no need for the book. That's what I felt after reading it. There was no need for this book to exist except to give Dick Grayson an adventure as Batman.Besides that the hardcover is a pretty edition. No extras at all, but when you take off the dust-jacket you can see some pretty art on the cover and back. Is a spread taken out of the last chapter in the book. Paper quality is very good too.The art is SO good. I'm a big fan of Tony Daniel's art. Simple as that. I hope I see more of him in the future as an artist.Taken that into account I suggest that, If you must (and only if you must) get this one but don't pay full price. As I said before is not necessary for the Batman & Robin Grant Morrison run nor Batman Inc. nor nothing. Is just an adventure and nothing more.

    Bruce is Gone

*by K***S on Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2011*

Dick has taken up his mantle, he has proven himself more than deserving after a long and troublesome journey internally and externally. It's honestly hard to believe, at first thought, that anyone could effectively be Batman better than Bruce. Tony Daniel has proven otherwise. My only complaint is that character development is a little on the lacking side, that this story feels a little rushed. But I'm sure most would understand that getting used to a new pair of wings isn't going to come out perfect.
