En una especie de un periplo lexical abarrocado, Alejo Carpentier nos conduce por los territorios colonizados por la monarquía francesa para dar cuenta de lo real maravilloso posible de gentes mandingas y cimarromas queriendo y pudiendo romper cadenas de vasallaje y esclavitud. Libertad acaso, no lo sabemos, pero si nos conduce por entre opresiones distiguidas y liberaciones místicas. Una obra de arte en el reino de este mundo.

I confess my overlooking Carpentier's production. Perhaps due to the extraordinary eclosion of masters like Gabriel García Márquez, Octavio Paz, Carlos Fuentes, Mario Vargas Llosa, etc, etc.  Richness of  lexicon, meticulous selection of true historical facts, surprising exhibition of marvelous realism well into the realm of fantasy, crude sociological reflections on the digraces of an unfortunate country all of these highly qualify "El reino de este mundo". Five stars !!

Alejo Carpentier is one of the most skillful story tellers of the magical realism tradition (he actually coined the phrase).  He paints a vivid picture of Caribbean (in this case, Haitian) colonial life.  Like others of the genre, El Reino de Este Mundo is steeped in sorrow, and nourished with wonder.
