    Do not buy digitally.

Welp... I was excited to have this in my digital collection but, like other's have been saying, the quality is junk - Whole pages are omitted, discoloration, misaligned panels... i mean... Is there even quality control at Viz? How did this get past them? It's like someone drunk scanned some pages and passed it on to another drunk person to finish and did it all on a 30 year old pc with a faulty disk-drive. I hope I can get my money back. Check the pics I've uploaded to see how bad it is.

Excellent first volume but contains a few embarrassing errors

This review is for the Kindle version.I was first introduced to Blue Exorcist through the anime in Spring 2011. I loved it so much that I started reading the manga through scanlations (this is all that was available at the time). In the years since I've become quite the expert on all things Blue Exorcist, and there's a certain degree of quality that I've come to expect from this series. Part of the reason why I subscribed to Shonen Jump online is to read the latest Blue Exorcist chapter every month in official, legal English, and after a long time I finally decided to purchase all of the to-date released volumes in English.Katoh-sensei's series is beautiful and an example of shonen manga at its finest, and it is not for her work that I must downrate this volume a bit. Rather, VIZ did not do their best on this English release and that's a serious blunder on an otherwise perfect volume. There are several mistakes on the names of characters, such as Shiemi being introduced incorrectly as "Murayama" when her family name is Moriyama (which can be seen correctly printed on the character files a few pages later). In addition, several pages are much lighter than others, that is to say that the ink looks washed out (almost like a computer scan) and it's jarring between the other, normal looking pages. While these issues are not major enough to have ruined my enjoyment of the volume, they are embarrassing for a professional release, especially for a well respected company like Viz Media. I do so hope that in later printings the mistakes will be corrected.Overall, this is a very faithful translation and production of the first volume of Katoh-sensei's amazing manga.

“I need to become a respectable person.”

Orphan Rin Okumura and his brother Yukio were raised by famous exorcist Father Fujimoto. What Rin didn’t know was that he was being protected from the secret of his true nature and status as the child of Satan himself. After a heated argument leads to a dramatic and dire upsetting of the status quo, Rin vows to fight his dual heritage and become an exorcist himself. It won’t be easy…Blue Exorcist takes a solid central idea and really runs with it. The key, as with any great story, is in the characters. The opening chapters firmly illustrate the current conditions of Rin’s life and naturally convey the motivations and frustrations behind his attitude and actions, as well as those of Father Fujimoto. The second half of the volume establishes his brother Yukio as another vital character with his own distinct views, goals, and personality. This all works together to ground the plot and action and make everything engaging. And there’s plenty of action to get into. From dealing with bullies to facing the truth behind his situation to training at school, Rin’s journey contains a lot of chaos and it’s all well done. The tension is kept up nicely and the entire atmosphere adds nice layers to Rin’s internal conflicts and difficult choices.Blue Exorcist strives to transcend it’s typical Shounen trappings and elements with depth. And so far it’s succeeding.
