Plutarch's influential writings on the ancient world Plutarch's parallel biographies of the great men in Greek and Roman history are cornerstones of European literature, drawn on by countless writers since the Renaissance. This selection provides intimate glimpses into the lives of these men, revealing why the mild Artaxerxes forced the killer of his usurping brother to undergo the horrific "death of two boats"; why the noble Dion repeatedly risked his life for the ungrateful mobs of Syracuse; why Demosthenes delivered a funeral oration for the soldiers he had deserted in battle; and why Alexander self-destructed after conquering half the world. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Review: Exactly what I expected! - My daughter and I are taking on Plutarch this year for her school. After trying to read free online versions and feeling overwhelmed, we looked for a better option. It was recommended to buy the Penguin Classics edition. Although itโs a bit pricey if you plan to read all the Lives and the paper quality isnโt great, this version is better, especially for a beginner! The readability is so much improved! We actually feel like we can now tackle this and learn effectively! Review: Great book - Great book, beautifully written.

A most excellent translation
A great translation of Plutarch into English. An interesting account of not only the character of Alexander but of other historical figures as well, including Demosthenes, the most famous orator of the ancient world.

Gotta love Plutarch. This is a great copy
Gotta love Plutarch. This is a great copy, though I'm still holding out for when all of Plutarch's lives are published in conjunction in one volume.
