I'm planning on using this to convert a gopro feed for a blackmagic atem switcher, will this convert it to a usable format?

Hi Aaron, We generally use the decimator to convert a computer hdmi output (powerpoint slide) to be used with our blackmagic switcher (1080i59.94).  It works great and I believe it will work with whatever video feed as well.  I would think any camera with an hdmi or sdi out.  I am not sure what the gopro out is? When I was first introduced to the decimator my av friend said it was the swiss army knife for video.  So if anything will help this should work for you.  (probably as useful as a barco scaler (7K) which I used to rent to convert slides)  hope this helps -Luke Thorpe

I have two hdmi to sdi camcorders that need scaling to be compatible with the atem switcher.  is it possible to use this device with both?

This is a single channel unit--you would need one MD-HX per camera. You did mention your signal needs to be scaled, so I'm guessing you have the original ATEM Television Studio which was only compatible with 1080 60i? The later ATEM's including the current Television Studio HD can handle a variety of formats. If by any chance your camera outputs 1080 23.98psf (Sony, Panasonic), that does need converting to 23.98p for those switchers, and the cheapest way to do it is with the Decimator MD-LX that can cross convert from HDMI to SD and back again, and will convert 23.98psf to 23.98p.

Like (almost) everything else. if it's present, it prohibits conversion to SDI

If there is no signal being fed to the sdi-input, can the hdmi output be used as a passthrough for the hdmi input?

It can be used as a pass-through.  One thing that I've found in my testing is that it also does simultaneous cross converting.  You can use the HDMI->SDI at the same time as the SDI->HDMI (even with different picture formats).  You can also use the SDI Out or HDMI out no matter what input you use.Pretty neat little device!
