There is no opening for the feet. You can't walk with it. My granddaughter wore her bathing suit and we put the mermaid on at edge of the pool or bathtub. Bit awkward but it produced a lot of joy. :)) **Q: Can the child walk in it?** A: No. All they can really do is hop. The feet are completely enclosed in the bottom of the tail. **Q: should i get a medium or large for a slim 9 year old** A: I would get the large... Ended up giving to my almost 6 yo (who wears a 5) and got a larger size for the 8 yo. They love playing in them. A little pricey for the quality...the sparkly started wearing off after the 1st day and the foam tail is flimsy.
