    fantastic little camera

*by C***Y on Reviewed in the United States on March 17, 2015*

first off this camera is probably not for someone who wants to 'point and shoot'. although it can be used like that, and results would be great, there are much more cost effective and appropriate 'point and shoot' oriented cameras out there - for instance the panasonic gm1, gm5, and gf7.i bought this camera as a replacement for a broken olympus omd em5. i also bought the vf-4. i prefer the rangefinder style and found the hump on the em5 to be obtrusive. also this camera has a faster top shutter - 1/8000 - which allows wide open shooting in broad daylight. neither the em10 nor the em5 have that. the vf-4 is notably better than the evf on the omd twins as well.picture quality: people argue both sides of micro 43 vs aps. i am quite happy with the images from this particular sensor. i shoot raw and can't comment on jpegs. i get very good minimal noise images at iso 3200. these images are comparable to what i get from my fuji x100. i am not a pixel peeper.bottom line for me is the size advantage of micro 43 is measurable (some of the APS bodies may be about the same size but equivalent APS lenses are a good bit bigger). and while i'm on lenses, the selection for m43 is phenomenal. lots of choices, high quality, and reasonable prices.operational speed is amazing. this camera is dslr fast.flip down touch screen is an extremely useful tool. every serious camera should have this feature.build and handling are great. i love the 'twin dial' operation. the camera just feels and looks great.menus are complicated, but coming from the omd i was already acclimated. the key is the super control panel or 'scp'. once that is set up just press 'ok' and all secondary functions are accessed - focus type, metering, drive, flash settings, iso etc - for easy adjustments.built in flash is great. with a fast lens one shouldnt need flash for darkish conditions, but i use a lot of fill flash on sunny/shadowy days. i missed having built in flash on the omd. the one here is very nice and it's output is easy to tweek on the fly via the scp.my biggest gripe about the camera is the lack of a built in finder. the attachable vf4 evf is dynamite, and besides, for many conditions i'm comfortable composing on the flip down screen. but the whole notion of evf as attachable add on accessory is not an elegant or ideal solution. bottom line, a camera of this size and price should have a built in evf - sony does it, fuji does it, panasonic does it. hell my old circa 1968 film pen f is about the same size and even IT has a thru the lens finder. olympus you really need to get with it here.micro 43 is great system for many uses, and the ep5 is the best micro 43 camera for me. however the price is high for what it is, and the lack of a built in evf is regrettable.

Excellent image quality but unacceptable battery life

*by D***C on Reviewed in the United States on August 25, 2013*

Switching from Panasonic GF1 to Olympus E-P5 was a big step up in image quality but a big step down in terms of usability (read below).Note that throughout this review I'm mostly comparing EP5 with my trusty Panasonic GF1 that I'm using for quite a few years.Positives:- Excellent image quality - ISO2000 is always usable, while at higher ISO it depends on luck and needs.- Great image stabilizer - I could take sharp images at 20mm & 1/2s.- Good focus precision and speed in static scenes (especially with newer lenses).Negatives:- Main negative point: Battery life is unreasonably short. I could easily shoot for a full day (a few hundred pics) with Panasonic GF1, but I can't do this with EP5, especially if I use the flash. I don't want to take extra batteries with me because that would be against the very reason I purchased this camera: mobility. I could shoot for a full day with a fresh battery with all of my cameras so far, so I expect no less from my next camera.- It always feels slow. Need to wait 1 second to switch menu view, which sometimes drives me nuts. Flash is always recharging a few seconds too late, by when I miss the scene. Autofocus tracking is bad - focusing fails on most moving targets. Sometimes the preview button just doesn't work (!) - need to press it many times and after maybe 6-7 seconds it starts working again.- The user interface is in general an exercise in frustration. The menus are the worst I've seen: poorly grouped, poor choices of GUI design. Most of the time I can't find important settings because they are "buried" deep among countless less important options, and there's no obvious grouping criteria.- The "review picture" mode does not overlay the main picture parameters such as exposure time, fstop and iso - the only way to see that info is a view mode where the image is thumbnailed, and it's so small that it's almost useless. However, it overlays useless info such as aspect ratio and image quality settings (!).- Flash pop up button is too easy to press. It gets pressed often in my backpack and the flash pops out. Breaking it is a matter of time.- Battery door is flimsy and under designed compared to GF1.- The English used in the menus is sometimes questionable.I'm returning the camera mainly because of battery life; considering a Panasonic GX7 instead.Overall an interesting but frustrating combination of excellent image quality and user-unfriendliness.I've learned to live with camera limitations, so for me the image quality and the very good image stabilizer are more important than poor ergonomics. However, the short battery life is just not acceptable.Edit: In the end I returned the EP5, skipped the GX7 and jumped straight to Sony RX1. Couldn't be happier with the choice.
